What To Do If Your Pet Is Bleeding

If your pet is bleeding excessively, you are going to need to stop the bleeding. How you stop the bleeding depends on if your pet is bleeding lightly or severely, or if your pet is bleeding internally.

Muzzle Your Pet

The first thing you want to do is muzzle your pet. You don't want your pet to bite you, which they may be more likely to do when they are injured, even if they are usually calm. They are going to be in pain and may respond defensively, which is why you should muzzle your pet.

Apply Gauze

Next, you should apply a clean and thick gauze pad over the wound. Put the pad over the wound, and apply pressure until the blood starts to clot and stop bleeding so much. Hold the pad in place for a couple of minutes, then check and see if the bleeding is slowing down. Don't check to see if the bleeding has slowed down every few seconds; this is not enough time for the bleeding to slow down.

Severe Bleeding

If the bleeding is severe, you may need to apply a tourniquet. Wrap up gauze and a bandage over the wound, and keep putting pressure on the wound. For about thirty seconds every fifteen minutes or so, loosen up the tourniquet and then tighten it up. If your pet is bleeding severely, you are going to want to get your pet to the vet as quickly as possible to help you stop the bleeding.

Internal Bleeding

You can tell if your pet is bleeding internally based on a number of symptoms. Your pet may bleed from the mouth, nose and rectum when they are experiencing internal bleeding. Your pet may cough up blood or expel blood in their urine. You may also notice that your pet's gums are pale and that your pet seems exhausted. Their heartbeat may also be weak and rapid.

If you notice the signs of internal bleeding, you are not going to be able to stop the bleeding yourself. You are going to need to wrap your pet up in a blanket to keep them warm, as your pet may not be able to keep themselves warm, and get your pet to the vet immediately.

When your pet experiencing bleeding, first you should try to stop the bleeding. After that, you should try to get your pet to the vet or animal hospital, like Buck Road Animal Hospital, so that they can help stop the bleeding and protect your pet from whatever is causing the bleeding.
